Efficiency is the SEER2 each listing publishes (higher uses less electricity), and the heating limit is the lowest outdoor temperature the retailer says it heats at. The price is for the system as listed, before installation; a DIY kit's line set comes pre-charged, but connecting it is still work for an EPA 608 certified technician.

Figures are the ones each listing publishes; "Not published" means the listing does not state that figure. Where one model number is sold as more than one listing, the row shows the cheapest and links the others. Mini-split air conditioners: questions, answered

What is the cheapest mini-split in stock right now?

The Pioneer WYT012GLUI17RL (11,500 BTU) at $664 from Sylvane, the lowest live price among the 68 in-stock mini-splits in this chart. The cheapest unit is only a good buy if it is the right size for your room, so check the size column first.

What is the quietest mini-split in stock?

Of the 37 in-stock mini-splits whose listing publishes an indoor noise rating, the lowest is 20 dB(A), on the MRCOOL DIY-24-HP-WM-230D25-O (24,000 BTU). Listings do not all say how they measured, so treat a gap of a few decibels as close. Sort the chart by noise to see every rating.

Which mini-split is the most energy efficient?

Among the 58 in-stock mini-splits rated on the SEER2 scale, the Senville SENA-09HF-16 (9,000 BTU) rates highest at SEER2 27.4. A higher SEER2 means less electricity for the same cooling. A listing that publishes no SEER2 figure shows as not published and is not ranked.

Can I install a mini-split myself?

21 of the 85 mini-splits in this chart are DIY kits: the line set comes pre-charged with quick-connect fittings, so there is no vacuum pump or refrigerant charging on site. You can mount the units and route the lines yourself, but under EPA Section 608 connecting or disconnecting refrigerant lines is work for a certified technician, and the EPA says that includes the pre-charged line sets of DIY kits. Most areas also want a permit for the outdoor unit and the dedicated circuit.

Do mini-splits heat too?

Every mini-split in the chart also heats. Where the retailer states it, the chart shows the lowest outdoor temperature each is rated to heat at; the lowest stated is -22°F.

What size mini-split do I need?

Size it to the room rather than buying the biggest you can afford: an oversized unit cools in short bursts and leaves the air damp. The sizing calculator turns your room's square feet, sun and occupancy into the BTU to look for, using ENERGY STAR's sizing chart, and lists the in-stock units that fit.
