The price is for the system as listed, before installation; a DIY kit's line set comes pre-charged, but connecting it is still work for an EPA 608 certified technician.

Figures are the ones each listing publishes; "Not published" means the listing does not state that figure. 110V mini-splits: questions, answered

Is a 110-volt mini-split the same as a 115-volt one?

Yes. 110, 115 and 120 volts all name the standard North American household supply, which is nominally 120 volts; makers rate their units at 115 volts, the nameplate figure for equipment on a 120-volt circuit. Every one of the 24 mini-splits on this page is rated 115 V by its listing or its retailer.

Can a 110-volt mini-split plug into a regular outlet?

None of the 24 listings here says it comes with a plug, so plan to wire it to a circuit as its installation manual specifies; most makers call for a dedicated one. What a 115-volt model saves is the circuit: a single-pole 120-volt circuit in place of the double-pole 240-volt circuit a larger mini-split needs.

How big a room can a 110-volt mini-split cool?

The largest here is 12,000 BTU, which ENERGY STAR's sizing chart recommends for a room of 450 to 550 sq ft. For a bigger room, the mini-splits in this chart from 15,000 BTU up all run on 208/230 volts. ENERGY STAR publishes the chart for room air conditioners; a mini-split is rated in the same BTU of cooling, so it is a fair first estimate.

Is a 115-volt mini-split less efficient than a 230-volt one?

Hardly: where one range sells the same size on both supplies and both listings state a SEER2, the two ratings are within 1 of each other: the Senville Leto 12,000 BTU Mini Split Heat Pump (SEER2 21.2 on 115 V, 21.2 on 208/230 V), the Senville Leto 9,000 BTU Mini Split Heat Pump (SEER2 21.2 on 115 V, 21.2 on 208/230 V), the Pioneer Diamante Essenza 11,500 BTU Ductless Mini Split (SEER2 17 on 115 V, 17 on 208/230 V) and the Pioneer Essenza 9,000 BTU Gen 2 Ductless Mini Split Heat Pump (SEER2 20 on 115 V, 21 on 208/230 V). What changes is the circuit it needs and how big it goes: in this chart, 115-volt mini-splits stop at 12,000 BTU.

What is the cheapest 110-volt mini-split in stock right now?

The Pioneer WYT012ALUI17RL (11,500 BTU) at $688 from Sylvane, the lowest live price among the 21 in-stock 110-volt mini-splits in this chart. The cheapest unit is only a good buy if it is the right size for your room, so check the size column first.

What is the quietest 110-volt mini-split in stock?

Of the 13 in-stock 110-volt mini-splits whose listing publishes an indoor noise rating, the lowest is 38 dB(A), on the Senville SENL-09CD-16NB (9,000 BTU) and the MRCOOL EZPRO-09-HP-11516D-O (9,000 BTU). The MRCOOL A-09-HP-115D-O (9,000 BTU) is close behind at 40 dB(A), a gap small enough that you may not hear it. Listings do not all say how they measured, so treat a gap of a few decibels as close. Sort the chart by noise to see every rating.

Which 110-volt mini-split is the most energy efficient?

Among the 20 in-stock 110-volt mini-splits rated on the SEER2 scale, the MRCOOL DIY-09-HP-WM-115D25-O (9,000 BTU) rates highest at SEER2 23.6. A higher SEER2 means less electricity for the same cooling. A listing that publishes no SEER2 figure shows as not published and is not ranked.

Can I install a 110-volt mini-split myself?

10 of the 24 110-volt mini-splits in this chart are DIY kits: the line set comes pre-charged with quick-connect fittings, so there is no vacuum pump or refrigerant charging on site. You can mount the units and route the lines yourself, but under EPA Section 608 connecting or disconnecting refrigerant lines is work for a certified technician, and the EPA says that includes the pre-charged line sets of DIY kits. Most areas also want a permit for the outdoor unit and the dedicated circuit.

Do 110-volt mini-splits heat too?

Every 110-volt mini-split in the chart also heats. Where the retailer states it, the chart shows the lowest outdoor temperature each is rated to heat at; the lowest stated is -22°F.

What size 110-volt mini-split do I need?

Size it to the room rather than buying the biggest you can afford: an oversized unit cools in short bursts and leaves the air damp. The sizing calculator turns your room's square feet, sun and occupancy into the BTU to look for, using ENERGY STAR's sizing chart, and lists the in-stock units that fit.
