Efficiency is the SEER2 each listing publishes (higher uses less electricity), and the heating limit is the lowest outdoor temperature the retailer says it heats at. The price is for the system as listed, before installation; a DIY kit's line set comes pre-charged, but connecting it is still work for an EPA 608 certified technician.
Figures are the ones each listing publishes; "Not published" means the listing does not state that figure. Where one model number is sold as more than one listing, the row shows the cheapest and links the others. Prices are live retailer offers, checked October 27, 2026, and change often; compare.ac may earn a commission on purchases, at no cost to you.
About 350 to 400 sq ft: ENERGY STAR's sizing chart recommends 9,000 BTU for a room that size, and 10,000 BTU from 400 sq ft. ENERGY STAR publishes the chart for room air conditioners; a mini-split is rated in the same BTU of cooling, so it is a fair first estimate. The makers of the 16 models here that state a room size give 350 to 400 sq ft. The chart assumes an ordinary room: add 10% for a very sunny room, take 10% off for a heavily shaded one, add 600 BTU for each person beyond two who is regularly in it, add 4,000 BTU for a kitchen, and size up for a ceiling above about 8 feet. The compare.ac size calculator applies all of these to your room.
For the equipment, $739 to $2,029 at today's in-stock prices (17 models, at Sylvane), with the middle price $1,083; DIY kits with a pre-charged line set start at $1,249. Installation is extra: This Old House's cost guide (updated August 28, 2026) puts a 9,000 BTU mini-split at $3,000 to $4,200 installed. The mini-split cost page sets every size side by side.
Not always: 10 of the 20 here run on 115 volts, the standard household supply, and 7 need a 208/230-volt circuit (3 do not state a voltage). A 208/230-volt circuit takes a double-pole breaker, two spaces in the panel, and a 115-volt one a single-pole breaker; either way the installation manual sets the circuit and breaker size, and most makers call for a dedicated circuit.
The Senville SENL-09CD-16NB (9,000 BTU) at $739 from Sylvane, the lowest live price among the 17 in-stock 9,000 BTU mini-splits in this chart. The cheapest unit is only a good buy if it is the right size for your room, so check the size column first.
Of the 6 in-stock 9,000 BTU mini-splits whose listing publishes an indoor noise rating, the lowest is 38 dB(A), on the Senville SENL-09CD-16NB (9,000 BTU) and the MRCOOL EZPRO-09-HP-11516D-O (9,000 BTU). The MRCOOL A-09-HP-115D-O (9,000 BTU) is close behind at 40 dB(A), a gap small enough that you may not hear it. Listings do not all say how they measured, so treat a gap of a few decibels as close. Sort the chart by noise to see every rating.
Among the 14 in-stock 9,000 BTU mini-splits rated on the SEER2 scale, the Senville SENA-09HF-16 (9,000 BTU) rates highest at SEER2 27.4. A higher SEER2 means less electricity for the same cooling. A listing that publishes no SEER2 figure shows as not published and is not ranked.
5 of the 20 9,000 BTU mini-splits in this chart are DIY kits: the line set comes pre-charged with quick-connect fittings, so there is no vacuum pump or refrigerant charging on site. You can mount the units and route the lines yourself, but under EPA Section 608 connecting or disconnecting refrigerant lines is work for a certified technician, and the EPA says that includes the pre-charged line sets of DIY kits. Most areas also want a permit for the outdoor unit and the dedicated circuit.
Every 9,000 BTU mini-split in the chart also heats. Where the retailer states it, the chart shows the lowest outdoor temperature each is rated to heat at; the lowest stated is -22°F.
