Portables are often advertised by their older ASHRAE rating; the Department of Energy's SACC rating, which counts the heat that leaks back in, is lower for the same unit, so compare a portable's BTU only with other portables. Room size is the maker's own figure.

Figures are the ones each listing publishes; "Not published" means the listing does not state that figure. Where one model number is sold as more than one listing, the row shows the cheapest and links the others. Prices are live retailer offers, checked October 6, 2026, and change often; compare.ac may earn a commission on purchases, at no cost to you.

Portable air conditioners: questions, answered

What is the cheapest portable air conditioner in stock right now?

The LG LP0625WFR (10,000 BTU) at $288 from Sylvane, the lowest live price among the 27 in-stock portable air conditioners in this chart. The cheapest unit is only a good buy if it is the right size for your room, so check the size column first.

What is the quietest portable air conditioner in stock?

Of the 17 in-stock portable air conditioners whose listing publishes an indoor noise rating, the lowest is 44 dB(A), on the LG LP1419IVSM (14,000 BTU). Listings do not all say how they measured, so treat a gap of a few decibels as close. Sort the chart by noise to see every rating.

Why do portable air conditioners have two BTU ratings?

Many portables are still advertised by the older ASHRAE rating. The US Department of Energy's SACC rating also counts the heat that leaks back in through the hose and the casing, so it is lower for the same unit. Compare portables with each other on the same rating, and do not compare a portable's ASHRAE figure with a window unit's BTU.

Do portable air conditioners heat too?

8 of the 46 portable air conditioners in this chart also heat; the rest are cooling only. The chart marks which is which.

What size portable air conditioner do I need?

Size it to the room rather than buying the biggest you can afford: an oversized unit cools in short bursts and leaves the air damp. The sizing calculator turns your room's square feet, sun and occupancy into the BTU to look for, using ENERGY STAR's sizing chart, and lists the in-stock units that fit.
