Is there a window air conditioner that is a heat pump?

Three different things are sold as a window unit with heat. What sets them apart is how cold it can be outside before each one stops warming the room, and what that warmth costs.

The short answer

Yes. 2 window air conditioners we list in stock are heat pumps, from $1,649 to $2,629, but their heat pumps stop working near 40°F outside. For heat below freezing, the two we could verify are the Midea Packaged Window Heat Pump and the Gradient All-Weather 120V, both rated to run down to -13°F on a standard 120-volt outlet, and no store we track sells either. Most window units sold with heat are not heat pumps: 16 of the 23 in stock that we list heat with an electric coil.

Cold-climate heat pump

Rated to -13°F

Sits over the sill, half inside and half out, with no heating coil. Made for real winter heat on a standard outlet. Not sold by any store we track.

Heat pump that stops near 40°F

Stops near 40°F

Often sold as "supplemental heat" at ordinary window-AC prices. Cheap to run in spring and fall, no use on a cold night unless it has an electric back-up.

Electric coil

Heats in any weather

Like a space heater: one watt of heat per watt. On a standard plug it makes at most about 4,900 BTU. 16 of the 23 window units with heat we list in stock.

Each is a heat pump by its own documents, not by the words "with heat". "Works down to" is the outdoor temperature its source states for the heat pump, and an hour's cost is its stated draw at the US average electricity price.

Note: Friedrich says the older 115-volt KHS10 has no supplemental heat and gives no heat below 40°F, while its current brochure lists a 4,000 BTU electric back-up for the newer KHVS10B11B. Ask the seller which revision you are buying if you need heat below 40°F.

The two rated for real cold

These straddle the window sill, half inside and half out, and neither has a heating coil. The figures are each maker's own spec sheet, not a certification we could check. At 125 to 140 lb each is more than twice the weight of a typical window unit, and Gradient says fitting one takes two people.

BTU per hour. COP is heat per unit of electricity: a coil is 1.0. Gradient's two spec sheets differ slightly, so its COP, its output at -7°F and its weight are given as ranges. Both makers state an operating limit of -13°F.

What an hour of heat costs

The Friedrich Kuhl 10,000 BTU Window & Wall Air Conditioner Heat Pump makes 8,800 BTU for about $0.18 an hour above its limit, where a coil making the same heat would cost about $0.48. By Midea's own figures, its cold-climate unit makes 9,000 BTU for about $0.12 an hour at 47°F and about $0.24 at 5°F. The same heat from a coil would cost about $0.49, and no coil on a standard plug can make it.

Frequently asked

Do window heat pumps work in freezing weather?
Most do not. The window heat pumps sold in ordinary stores stop near 40°F outside: Sylvane lists the Keystone KSTAW08INV-HC as running in heat mode from 41°F to 75°F, and the Friedrich Kuhl at a minimum of 40°F. The two we could verify for real cold are the Midea Packaged Window Heat Pump (MAH09H1AGR) and the Gradient All-Weather 120V, which their makers rate down to -13°F.
What happens below 40°F on a window heat pump?
It depends on the model. A 115-volt unit with no back-up, such as the Keystone KSTAW08INV-HC, stops heating until it warms up outside. A 230-volt Friedrich Kuhl falls back on its electric back-up, which keeps heating but costs what any coil costs. Check for a back-up before you count on one for a cold night.
Is "supplemental heat" on a window AC a heat pump?
Sometimes, which is why the phrase does not tell you. Both coils and heat pumps are sold with those words. The figure tells you more: on a standard 115-volt plug a coil cannot make more than about 4,900 BTU of heat, so a 115-volt unit rated well above that is a heat pump, while one rated around 3,500 BTU is almost certainly a coil.
Is a window heat pump cheaper to run than electric heat?
In mild weather, yes. The Friedrich Kuhl 10,000 BTU Window & Wall Air Conditioner Heat Pump is rated 8,800 BTU of heat at about $0.18 an hour at the US average electricity price. A coil making the same heat would cost about $0.48. The saving shrinks as it gets colder, and a heat pump that has stopped saves nothing.
Do window heat pumps need a special outlet?
Not all of them. The Keystone, the Soleus Air units, the 10,000 BTU Friedrich Kuhl and both cold-climate models run on a standard 115 or 120-volt outlet. The larger Friedrich Kuhl units need a 230-volt outlet with the matching plug, and the table above lists the supply of each.
Should I get a window heat pump or a mini split?
For most of a cold winter, a mini split. Many are certified for their output at 5°F and they come in larger sizes, though one costs more and needs an outdoor unit mounted. A window heat pump suits a room or a rented home where you cannot mount one, and as a way to heat through spring and fall without running a coil.
