How cold can a mini split heat?

What each mini split still delivers when it is freezing outside, from its ENERGY STAR certified ratings at 5°F and 17°F, not the "works down to" figure on the box.

The short answer

Yes: a modern mini split keeps heating well below freezing. Of the 31 mini splits we list whose ENERGY STAR certification we matched by model number, the middle one can still deliver 72% of its rated 47°F heat when it is 5°F outside (its maximum output there), and they range from 49% to 110%. At 5°F the middle model still makes 2.0 times as much heat as a space heater from the same electricity (a COP of 2.0). 26 of the 31 carry ENERGY STAR's cold-climate designation, which requires, among other criteria, at least 70% of the rated 47°F heat and a COP of at least 1.75 at 5°F. The makers of 20 of them rate them to keep running down to between 5°F and -22°F, but output falls as it gets colder, so the 5°F figure is the one to size by.

Each row is the certified pairing of the listing's outdoor and indoor units, matched by model number. The 5°F figure is the pairing's maximum output there, rated with the compressor at full speed; the 47°F and 17°F figures are its rated outputs, which is why a 5°F figure can be higher than the 17°F one, or than the 47°F rating itself (a share above 100%). "Kept at 5°F" is the 5°F maximum as a share of the rated 47°F output, the measure ENERGY STAR's cold-climate criteria use. "Rated to" is the maker's lowest operating temperature where its retailer states it.

Why "works down to -13°F" is not the number to buy by

A maker's lowest operating temperature says the unit keeps running, not how much heat it makes there. Output falls as the outdoor air gets colder, at a different rate for each model, so two units sold at the same size can deliver very different heat on a cold night. In this catalog the Senville SENA-06HF-NL can deliver 110% of its rated 47°F heat at 5°F, while the Daikin FTXF12AXVJU/RXF12AXVJU can deliver 49%. Every pairing ENERGY STAR certifies is also rated at 5°F, which is why those figures are the ones on this page.

ENERGY STAR's key product criteria for air-source heat pumps define the cold-climate designation.

Frequently asked

Do mini splits work in cold weather?
Yes. A mini split is a heat pump: it moves heat from the outdoor air into the room, and there is still heat to move at 5°F. Its output falls as it gets colder, which is why every certified pairing is also rated at 5°F. Of the 31 mini splits we list whose certification we matched, the middle one can still deliver 72% of its rated 47°F heat at 5°F (its maximum output there), at a COP of 2.0.
How cold can a mini split work?
Makers state the lowest outdoor temperature a model keeps heating at: for the 20 certified models we list whose listing states one, from 5°F down to -22°F. That is an operating limit, not a promise of full output. What a model delivers in the cold is its certified output at 5°F and 17°F, which the table on this page shows for each one.
What is a cold climate mini split?
One whose certified pairing earns ENERGY STAR's cold-climate designation: among other criteria, a COP of at least 1.75 at 5°F and at least 70% of its rated 47°F heating output at 5°F. 26 of the 31 certified mini splits we list carry it.
Is a mini split cheaper to heat with than a space heater?
A space heater turns each unit of electricity into one unit of heat (a COP of 1). The certified mini splits we list still make 1.8 to 2.4 units of heat per unit of electricity at 5°F, so for the same heat they use 41% to 56% of the electricity a space heater would, and less still in milder weather.
Do I need backup heat with a mini split?
Size it to the room's heat need on your coldest nights, not to its cooling: if the room needs more heat at your design temperature than the model's certified output near that temperature, it will fall short on those nights. The 5°F column is the honest figure to compare against; the maker's lowest operating temperature is not.
Do Pioneer mini splits work in cold weather?
Yes. The 11 Pioneer mini splits we list whose ENERGY STAR certification we matched can deliver between 71% and 101% of their rated 47°F heat when it is 5°F outside (their maximum output there). By line: Quantum Hyperformance 99% to 101%; Quantum Fresh 77%; Quantum Ultra 71% to 74%; Diamante Pro 73%; Diamante Ultra 73%. All of them carry ENERGY STAR's cold-climate designation.
Do MRCOOL mini splits work in cold weather?
Yes. The 9 MRCOOL mini splits we list whose ENERGY STAR certification we matched can deliver between 62% and 73% of their rated 47°F heat when it is 5°F outside (their maximum output there). By line: DIY 67% to 73%; Advantage 65% to 71%; DIY Easy Pro 62%. 5 of the 9 carry ENERGY STAR's cold-climate designation.
Do Senville mini splits work in cold weather?
Yes. The 9 Senville mini splits we list whose ENERGY STAR certification we matched can deliver between 70% and 110% of their rated 47°F heat when it is 5°F outside (their maximum output there). By line: Aura 77% to 110%; Leto 70% to 71%. All of them carry ENERGY STAR's cold-climate designation.
Do Daikin mini splits work in cold weather?
Yes. The 2 Daikin mini splits we list whose ENERGY STAR certification we matched can deliver between 49% and 71% of their rated 47°F heat when it is 5°F outside (their maximum output there). 1 of the 2 carries ENERGY STAR's cold-climate designation.
