Friedrich Uni-Fit vs WallMaster through-the-wall air conditioners

Both lineups side by side at every size both lines sell, from the 7 new through-the-wall air conditioners we can find in stock right now: live prices, CEER ratings, noise and the warranty each listing states.

The short answer

We track 3 Friedrich Uni-Fit and 4 Friedrich WallMaster through-the-wall air conditioners in stock, and both lines sell 2 sizes in common (10,000 and 12,000 BTU).

  • Friedrich Uni-Fit's cheapest model costs less at both sizes.
  • Friedrich WallMaster has 4 inverter models in stock, and no Friedrich Uni-Fit model in stock states an inverter compressor; an inverter compressor slows down instead of switching on and off, which is usually quieter and more efficient.
  • Friedrich Uni-Fit fits 24½, 26 and 27 in. sleeves and Friedrich WallMaster fits 27 in. sleeves, as the maker states them; a replacement has to fit the sleeve already in the wall, so measure it first.

What each maker says about the line

Friedrich Uni-Fit

Uni-Fit is the Friedrich through-the-wall unit made to fit existing 24½, 26 and 27-inch wall sleeves, including many other brands' sleeves, with a trim ring that covers small gaps. It comes in cooling-only (UCT) and electric heat (UET) models from 8,000 to 14,000 BTU, and a new installation needs a Friedrich sleeve, sold separately.

Friedrich WallMaster

WallMaster is the Friedrich through-the-wall unit for existing 27-inch sleeves, including Fedders A and B sleeves (B needs a baffle kit), and it mounts flush with the outside wall. Friedrich says current models use inverter compressors and R-32, and that the heat pump model heats down to 45°F outdoors.

How we compare two lines

  • Only new units we can find in stock with a live price, at the same size. A line's average says more about its size mix than about the line.
  • A price difference counts when it is at least 5% and at least $20, and only between models that install the same way (a do-it-yourself kit is never priced against an installer-fitted system).
  • Efficiency is compared on one scale (CEER) and counts at a gap of 0.5 or more; noise counts at 3 dB(A) or more, using only ratings checked against the retailer's specification for the exact model.
  • Warranty terms are as each listing states them. Models named in a CPSC recall are never compared or sold here.

Friedrich Uni-Fit vs Friedrich WallMaster: common questions

Is Friedrich Uni-Fit or Friedrich WallMaster cheaper?
It depends on the size. Comparing each line's cheapest new, in-stock model at the same size, Friedrich Uni-Fit's cheapest model costs less at 10,000 BTU ($849 against $1,199) and 12,000 BTU ($849 against $1,349). These are live retailer prices and change often.
What sizes do Friedrich Uni-Fit and Friedrich WallMaster through-the-wall air conditioners come in?
In stock right now, Friedrich Uni-Fit sells 8,000, 10,000 and 12,000 BTU and Friedrich WallMaster sells 10,000, 12,000 and 15,000 BTU. So only Friedrich Uni-Fit sells 8,000 BTU and only Friedrich WallMaster sells 15,000 BTU. Size the unit to the room first: an oversized unit short-cycles and leaves the air cool but damp.
Do Friedrich Uni-Fit and Friedrich WallMaster make inverter through-the-wall air conditioners?
No Friedrich Uni-Fit model in stock states an inverter compressor, and Friedrich WallMaster has 4, going by each listing and the maker's model numbers. An inverter compressor slows down instead of switching on and off, which is usually quieter and more efficient at part load.
Will Friedrich Uni-Fit or Friedrich WallMaster fit my wall sleeve?
Friedrich Uni-Fit: Friedrich says the Uni-Fit fits existing 24½, 26 and 27-inch sleeves, and lists these makers' sleeves (25½ to 27 inches wide) as compatible: Amana, Carrier 51S and 52F, Fedders/Emerson, Friedrich WallMaster (WSE), GE/Hotpoint, Whirlpool, Frigidaire and White-Westinghouse. A trim ring covers gaps of up to 1 inch at the sides and ½ inch at the top, and in an existing sleeve Friedrich's manual has you replace the old rear grille with the one in the kit. A new installation needs Friedrich's USC or USEZ sleeve, sold separately. Friedrich WallMaster: Made for existing 27-inch sleeves, including Fedders A sleeves and, with Friedrich's baffle kit, the deeper Fedders B; it mounts flush with the outside wall. A new installation needs Friedrich's WSE or WSEZ sleeve (27 x 16¾ x 16¾ in.), sold separately. Measure the inside width and height of the sleeve in your wall, and check its make if a label survives, before you order either.
Have any Friedrich Uni-Fit or Friedrich WallMaster through-the-wall air conditioners been recalled?
None of the 9 Friedrich Uni-Fit and 7 Friedrich WallMaster through-the-wall air conditioners we track is named in a CPSC recall notice we check. That covers the models listed here, not every model either line has sold, and it is not a safety certification.
